Thanks to the ACT passed in September of 2021, medical hair loss can qualify you to get coverage or reimbursement through your insurance provider for the cost of a cranial prosthesis.

What is A Cranial Prosthesis?

A Cranial Prothesis is the term used for medical-grade wigs. These Prothesis are manufactured and specifically created for clients who experience hair loss due to medical-related causes. Medical grade materials are used for construction, aimed at providing comfortability, durability, and natural appeal.

Types of Hair Loss

Many conditions are responsible for hair loss and a majority of them are related to medical conditions. Below are some, but not all-inclusive, of the conditions that may allow for coverage of your cranial prosthesis through your insurance provider.

Alopecia: Alopecia comes in many forms and is usually related to an autoimmune disorder that attacks hair follicles on the head and various areas of the body causing partial or total hair loss.  Some types of Alopecia can include but are not limited to; Alopecia Areata, Alopecia Totalis, Alopecia Universalis, (CCCA) Central Centrifugal Cicatricial Alopecia or Scarring Alopecia, Traction Alopecia and more.

Cancer; Chemotherapy/Radiation Related Hair loss: Chemotherapy, Radiation, and other cancer-related treatments can be very harsh, killing both healthy and affected cells which can lead to hair thinning, loss of hair, scalp irritation, and sensitivity. Anagen Effluvium is a term that can be used for abnormal, rapid loss of hair often caused by drugs used for cancer treatments or exposure to toxic chemicals.

Lupus: Lupus causes many people with this condition to experience sores, skin rashes, and irritation leading to thinning hair and hair loss, this can also be a side-effect of many medications used to treat the condition such as steroids and immunosuppressants.

Burns: Physical or Chemical burns can be a traumatic event causing scar tissue to form in areas where hair usually grows, once this tissue is formed the hair follicle is permanently damaged and the hair can no longer regrow. The constant reminder and emotional wound caused by such events qualify as a medical-related cause.

Trichotillomania: TTM is a hair-pulling disorder, a type of obsessive-compulsive disorder that is of psychological origin. It involves the action of pulling one’s hair repeatedly from various parts of the body, largely related to anxiety.

Scalp Infections: Scalp infections include scalp psoriasis, seborrheic dermatitis, ringworms, and more. They can have many origins such as fugal, autoimmune/immune-mediated, clogged sebaceous glands, etc.

Speak with your doctor or dermatologist to obtain a proper diagnosis for your specific form of hair loss. Please remember this list is not all-inclusive and many hair loss conditions can qualify you for cranial prosthesis coverage or reimbursement.

It is important to call your insurance benefits department and ask if they cover or reimburse for cranial prothesis due to medical hair loss. Some other questions you may want to ask include: Does your policy cover a cranial prosthesis? If it does, what type of prosthesis is covered (I.e. human hair wigs, synthetic wigs, etc.) How much of the cost do they cover? What specific terminology for a wig should the prescription contain? Is there required documentation they need to submit your claim? What is it? Note: When reviewing your insurance policy and you don’t see cranial prosthesis listed, it doesn’t necessarily mean you don’t have coverage. We strongly recommend that you call your health insurance company and get pre-authorization. While our Cranial Prosthesis Specialist will explain all of this to you during your consult, looking into this beforehand can help speed up the process.
